Default Taking the plunge against all better judgement!!!

I am going to buy a '04 disco against my own judgement and seemingly everyone I know! I am a simple blue-collar, child-support paying, aging dude that has always wanted one! I especialy hate the status thing about these things! I want one because I have always thought they were tough and and good looking and nothing else, aside from being out of my price range! I would NEVER drive a f&cking Escalade even if I could affford it! I understand all of the maintinance issues and will lean on people within this forum for help! I live very close to work and have a "beater" to rely on. I really only drive on average probably 5,000 miles a year and love to tinker, and I am cheap out of always being broke! Looking forward to being a rover nut!! Besides, my nine year old boy loves them too!!!

No worse than a boat! LOL

I think they get a bad rap. I've owned vehicles that were much worse. Do the work yourself and it's no worse than any other 4X4.

I have some jeep buddies that rag on mine all of the time yet they are always working on theirs. Mine has never left me stranded. To each his own. I have this feeling that if they didn't cost 45k new they wouldn't be hated so much.

They are like Macs, the only people smack talking them are the people who don't have them

Go for it.

So true photo..love my mac's and my Disco's. And I have two Disco's and both are great dependable vehicles. No other ride quit like it. They are my wife's and mine daily transportation. You sound like the perfect candidate so go for it. Oh, and I have not driven my 94 FJ80 in months. Trick to these trucks is a watchful eye on maintenance and fluid levels. And keep your fluids fresh.

Yep, fluids fluids fluids! Don't mix antifreezes, check levels, change your oil!

You'll be fine.

Congrats! My boy (just turned 7) loves it too. He likes to work on cars with me, so this is actually perfect for that! This is "our" truck to take snowboarding, mountain biking, kayaking, etc... all our dad/son stuff we love. So that makes it even more special!

Welcome to the Madness! They are amazing vehicles, regardless of the negative rap that they can get. Like Snafu, I use the truck to do all of the fun things with my son, and I agree it makes the experience even more special!

Congrats man. I've been doing Land Rover ownership ghetto for a few years now... Don't skimp on the servicing though. and use premium gas, it just works better.

Welcome to the club. They are great trucks... fun to work on, and most certainly the MAC of trucks. And i own 4 macs.... but currently only 1 Disco.
Like all have already said, maintenance is a big deal as is the ever rising price of premium. I tried to use regular for a bit as a test. soooo not worth it. SO go have fun with you son...
