x2 Mine seems to do the same thing and has done so for as long as I've owned the truck. The hesitation (if there really is any) is very slight, and might even be a matter of my driveway not being completely flat so the D2 just sits still until I give it a little gas.

The only time I can definitely say it hasn't gone right into gear is when I've not pulled the shifter all the way back into R as described by photocrimes.

Just rolled over 108k miles, full transmission fluid and filter change done at 102k miles.

 

My truck had the same pause this morning, it's had it as long as I can remember, probably since I bought it. 106k miles.

 

I don't (get to) drive my Disco daily. What happens? It hesitates? So what? I was hoping jelly beans started flying out of the tailpipe....

Well in the forward gears mine doesn't seem to blow anything but money out of the tail pipe.

 

Ok, I dont know if we can call this a firm conclusion or not, but these are the answers I was looking for.
I was trying to figure out if all DII transmissions hesitated when first throw into reverse right after starting in the morning.
This appears to be a DII transmission trait.
Good or bad I have no idea, but at least now if someone else comes on here and says something like "my truck wont move in the morning" we can tell them probably not to worry and its just a LR thing.
I would still recommend a fluid and filter change to them just to be safe.

I even tried to pulled a fast one. Using the left hand to turn the key while pre stepping on the brake. Put it in Reverse fast and about 1 second delay it went right in reverse as normal.

 

I wonder if our 03-04 transmissions are just better. I didn't notice anything, but I didn't use the two handed approach.

 

The '03 and '04 transmissions have a larger pump to handle the extra power from the engine.
So that could be why they dont do it.
