Default Thinking about buying one

Sorry if this the wrong spot for this question but I'm new here and looking for a little help. My wife and I are looking at a 2001 Discovery 2 SE7. It is in very good condition from outward appearance (no body damage, good paint / interior, average tires and runs well with no problems) We have no issues with it and like what we've seen but I'm curious about mechanical problems to look for with this particular model. Is there any specific mechanical issues? (I read about the greaseable drive line as one thing to change) This vehicle has about 95,000 miles on it and if we buy it I want to know what might need attention, it has no service records and there are no LR shops in our area so I don't know what has or has not been done to it. (I'm told it was checked out in 2005 by a LR shop in Seattle) I am fairly mechanically inclinded but don't want to pay to much or have to do any major work on it for a good long while. They are asking $8,000 but that seems a bit high to me and I imagine we can get the price down some (private party sale). I would certainly appreciate any help or direction. Thank you.

$8000 is very high for a 2001. Have a mechanic check out the truck before you buy so you know what you're getting into. A lot can change in 4 years since it was checked out last.

$5000 to $6000 should be the range and it better be pristien at that.
As mentioned, have a full buyers prepurchase done first.

Thanks for the replies guys, We really like this vehicle but don't want that to get in the way of good judgment, We may make an offer but it will have to be reasonable. Thanks again

I picked up a 2001 DII with 74k miles on it a couple of weeks ago. I had the headgaskets done 7k miles ago from a very solid LR shop here in San Diego. Overall good shape, fresh rear brakes, excellent tires, etc. I have a 99 DI as well. I thought that I had done my homework and had a good idea of immediate expenses that I would incur, even with that, I have probably put another $1K into it with new front brakes, a rebuilt front drive shaft, new radiator hoses, and a new headliner tomorrow. There are plenty out there in the $5k range, find one with the headgaskets done and is in good shape. OUrs is in great shape, now, and I love driving it but everytime that I turn it on, I breath a breath of releif when the check engine light doesn't come on.....You can easily get on the slippery slope.......good luck. Phil
