Default thinking of buying a 2004 disco

Hi,

I am new here, and am posting regarding this car that I am thinking of buying. It is a disco SE7 2004, with 60+ miles. I have not had access to the carfax report yet. However, if someone can help me out, that would be great:
VIN number SALTW19444A851430

Anyway, this vehicle was traded in, and the dealer does not have access to all the maintenance records. My question: how can I get the records? The dealer thinks this was owned by someone in eastern MA, and that's it.
Will carfax have details on the places where this car was serviced?

Anyhelp would be awesome....

If you can't get all the maintenance records don't let that turn you away from it. Just make sure it's in generally good shape. Test drive it for no less than a half hour, push every button, make sure everything works. Let us know of any issues you find. Good chance if you do find any it will be something stupid like the power windows not working that is usually an easy/cheap DIY fix. Keep in mind these trucks do REQUIRE premium gas, and you need to have the front drive shaft rebuilt with greasable u joints and a new centering ball. Won't cost more than $200-300, any driveshaft place can do it. Good luck let us know any questions you have

Thanks for the reply. Getting the records is a pain, so I just pulled the carfax report. No title or salvage issues (I have omitted those sections), but the car failed an emissions test early on..
Thoughts?

It was leased for the first year, then sold to a local, once the local traded it in, the dealer auctioned it off right away (probably because at the time there were really high gas prices, or no one bought it within 6 weeks). check EVERYTHING on it, anything thats wroung make that a downgrade in value. Make sure you convince the dealer your worried about the reliabilty, and gas millage of it.

Definately play the gas and reliability card on the dealership theyll cave under your overwhelming knowledge and point the fact about the front driveshaft needing to be rebuilt straight off the bat. If I would have known it ahead of time I would have tried to squeeze about $400 off my seller.

Default Help!

Okay guys, I have bought this car ($8300), but I am kind of nervous now, for the following reason:

i) After I bought the LR, I got hold of service records. 45k mileage service was done at a Land Rover dealership, and they said there was nothing wrong with the truck - some minor battery issues, etc.

ii) I was also able to get in touch with the local lady who owned the car for 2 years. Now, this is what I started to get a bit nervous. Right off the bat, she said that she would not recommend this car, mainly because of engine problem. I probed her further, and she said that there were some noises coming from the engine - something like a whirr-type noise when she started the car. She used to service the car at a local store for oils changes past the 45k miles, when the warranty expired.

She didn't want to deal with noise/s, so she traded in the car. She did not have someone investigate the engine noise in detail. Her final word was that besides this engine problem, the car ran great. She is a mom, and gave the impression of someone who was not interested in cars, or troubleshooting a maintenance issue...

ii) I have test driven the LR, at high RPMs as well, and I simply could not hear any noise. I have driven several 2003 LRs, and this one felt so much more powerful and smoother.

In fact, in my conversation with her, she asked me - couldn't you hear the noise from the engine? So, it was a pretty obvious noise, and since I cannot hear it, am I to assume that it was a minor problem that has been fixed?

Any suggestions on what could be the reason for an engine noise that caused this person to trade-in an LR, which is non-existent now?

iii) Mass has a 30 day lemon law, but I am now thinking of extended warranty - suggestions welcome!

DO NOT BUY A EXTENDED WARRENTY!! If you do I will show up on your door step and beat you silly.
The noise was either the secondary air injection pump or the ACE pump, both can be noisy, especially at start up.
It could have been taken care of by the dealer, dont worry about it.
Make sure that you use premium gas, have the front driveshaft rebuilt with greasable u-joints, chnage your coolant every 2 years and enjoy your truck.
