Default Ticks and Misses

3 situations with the 04.

1. I've got a miss on cylinder 4 still. changed plugs, 2nd time the wires have been changed, (once by dealer before i got the truck and now once by me, i got STI plug wires) coil pack has been changed within the year. i still get a cylinder 4 misfire code. thing is, when the engine is idling and i pull the cylinder 4 wire from the plug, there is no change and the engine only runs "rough" at start. any thoughts.

2. i've got a tick. comes and goes. only at idle and it goes away around 1200 rpm's. i got a couple feet of garden hose and listened for it. it's coming from the bottom of the motor, the front part of the sump. it's not coming from the exhaust or valve cover area. any thoughts.

3. i've got 2 pictures. one for reference and then a close up. what the heck is this thing and should it be making a racket?

Thanks in advance

I'm pretty much a N00b but maybe the below questions can help you get started...

1) No idea on the miss based on the info you've supplied. Is there any residue on the #4 plug itself? Have you confirmed that you're getting a spark on the #4 plug?

2) Have you had your oil pressure measured? What is your cold oil pressure at idle and 2000 RPM...hot oil pressure at idle and 2000 RPM? This is the kind of info the guys who really know what they're doing will need.

3) No clue. Have you looked for it in the RAVE? It is tough to see what it connects to in the picture...

3. That looks like the purge valve...common failure point. Any codes?

EDIT - with codes I meant any related to purge valve, eg. 044x?

3. That is fuel purge valve. It triggors Check engine light 0455. I replaced mine but it did not fix it. Still comes on about twice a month. Only when the gas is at 1/2 tank.

For you tick I would make sure you are using 10w-40 Mobil 1 or Shell Rotella, which is popular for our Discovery's. Also this oil below is supposed to be great for fixing weird ticks although I have only heard of success stories and not used it myself.

#4 plug is brand new. just change it out with the new wires.

i'll get the oil pressure checked this weekend.

i don't have any purge valve codes. maybe it's just noisy.

i'm changing my oil to rotella 15w-40 this weekend too.

thanks

3) Fuel Purge Valve-Mine ticks as well only when the truck is cold. It goes away after a couple of minutes. And no.....I have no idea why they tick but they tick hahahaha. First time I heard it, I $%&# my pants. I thought my valves were knocking. Then I got the stethoscope and decided to look for the "tick". Sure enough that's what it was. But as I said...it only does it when the truck is cold for the first few minutes or so. Maybe Disco Mike or Spike know why they tick and if this is normal?

i had the same problem only mine was a misfire on cylinder 8. i tired wires and plugs and they made no difference. it ended up being that the lifter for the intake on that cylinder was clogged.

I had a Wire Arcing to the head, and it made a ticking and made it drive like it was misfiring. Could that be happening? Have you inspected everything while running?
