Toyota Owner Who Dreams Loves Discos
Hey guys, I love the looks of Land Rovers, as I am a big fan of the safari type offroad vehicles.
I currently have a 97 4runner with 3" suspension lift 2" body lift and 33" bfg m/t. I love this truck as it gives me no problems at 211k I also love not being afraid to mod it. I hurculined the floors so now I just spray it out to clean it and I plan on durabaking the exterior.
Anyways I had a love for the LOOKS of the discos but not the horrible reliability problems I have seen with a friends 97 range rover and heard online.
What are the best years to look for these things with the bare essentials. I don't like all the electronics as I have seen they like to fail.
Is the reliability that bad? Should I just stick with my 4runner?

Toyota makes one hell of a truck.
back to back i think there is no comparison between the 2 when it comes to reliability.
there have been a few 4runners in the family and they lasted very long without much issue.
I did find the parts to be quite expensive for repairs.
BUT, I have to be able to enjoy myself behind the wheel.
and the 4runner is typical boring toyota. I think they are great...but not for me.
I'm willing to deal with the issues of discovery.....cause I love the truck, the look, the feel, its character....everything about it.
if your smart you stick with your 4runner
if your passionate you buy a Land Rover

look toyotas are great trucks but lets face it, you see like 20 parked in any parking lot you stop in.
they require little to no love to keep up. you just drive em.
personally i like a vehicle that i have to love on and work on to keep looking and running well. it means that i know my vehicle just that much more so no matter what or where i can have a pretty good idea how to fix it.
plus rovers are just soulful vehicles,,,even for trucks. i have owned jeeps, and blazers etc. the rover is the only truck i have ever enjoyed just being in.

there is certainly no comparison between the two when it comes to off-road capability. The 4-runners IFS will break long before the rovers SFA. I've seen IFS yotas try to keep up with Jeeps on the trail...they end up back in the garage.
I wasn't aware of them having solid front axles.
Anyways ifs isn't that bad, just a little harder to lift andyou have to worry about cv joints but I have never heard of them breaking on the trail.
My friends range rover, ahh! As you know the buttons never worked, air ride was replaced, sunroof leaks and doesn't close properly muh less open. Couldn't find a shop to replace the ac. Has had problems with supposivly water in gas, left him stranded in another state, cam shaft or crank shaft sensor broke, and nobody could diaganos it, two land rover dealers and a couple of shops. Land rover wanted to start replacing every sensor untill it worked, finally had a redneck shade tree mechanic figure it out.
Anyways there still something sexy about them, but why can't land rover build them solid. Is there a certain year I should look for?

I think you'll find the DI (94-99.5) is a simpler truck
The DII (99.5-on) is a bit bigger, more current, plush, etc.
Of the DI's, My personal preference is '97-'98 (closer to end of run)
Of the DII's, common feeling is the '04 is the best discovery, period.
(2003 had some oil pump nightmare issues)
For what it's worth, My '96 RR was the best truck I've owned, tho' I do almost ALL my own maint.
luck,greg

That isn't stopping me, Ill most likely keep my 4runner as a backup.

IFS is much weaker and at least double the cost to lift correctly. rockwell 2-1/2 ton and 5 ton axles use CV joints, I wouldn't consider them weak. The problem with CV joints is when they're not maintained and lose all their grease they become weaker.
