theres one big difference between D1 and P38. The P38 has a chain driven borg warner transfer case. I have a feeling this is the same case they used in the jeep cherokee/wagoneers and called the quad-track. Not the best transfer case IMO but some people like them.

This is true, I believe, tho', the failings of a chaindrive transfer case are from common lack of maint, a zillion miles, and ungodly (in our case) amounts of horsepower.

Those (3) are not applicable to me, anyway

the lack of maintenance is the chain needs to be changed every 50K miles..not a fun job

The P-38 and DII are sisters and the RRC, Defender and DI are sisters.
I LOVE the looks of the P-38, but with literally everything being controlled by computers...no thanks.

What's the gas mileage like on these things? I get pretty good gas mileage on everything I touch.

22mpg 4.0 07frontier
19mpg 97 4runner 6" lift and 33"s

also how much Will a decent lift set me back on these things? If it's solid axle I'd like around 4-5 and my 285/75/16s
You can expect 12-14 city and 18-20 expressway.
These trucks REQUIRE premium gas.
A 4" lift will cost double what a 3" lift will because you not only have to change all of the brake lines but also the driveshafts.

I did not know that, I bought my p38 with 110k & sold it with 170k.

My cherokee had almost 200k on it (odo broke at 180 as I recall)

I've probably put more time & money into my DI per mile driven than my p38, but I don't think the DI had much maint. b/4 I got it.

what year cherokee did you have? I think the quadratec they used in Jeeps can actually be tighten at 50k and should be replaced at 100k.

As I recall, it was an '83 (called a wagoneer, but cherokee body style)

It was actually reliable, but that was the first time I noticed how much was made in Mexico & Canada.

Sweet Jesus, it was a pig. (2.8 GM v6 with a two barrel) - I was embarrassed most of the time & got maybe 15mpg highway.

I doubt it would have spun the wheels on ice, I don't recall.

It was small inside, but very comfy on trips.

Please don't make me talk about that any more - LOL

a 2.8L?? are you sure? I don't think a 2.8L could move those big beast lol. I know them came with the classic Jeep 4.2L inline 6 and 360/401 V8s. A friend has one with the 360.
