Trip to Seattle from Boulder, CO begins Saturday. Transmission shudder off the line

Guys,
Have tooled this D2 around Boulder and Estes Park.
Time for a real trip now.
If I put the brake on and give it a little gas - shudders.

If I am starting off and give it a little gas - shudders.

Yet, shifts fine.

I changed the Filter, fluids.
I put in what Mike recommends - The long life Valvoline
and a bottle of Lucas trans stop slip stuff.

Scary when the hobby Discovery II becomes the daily driver.

Probably will not exceed 65 MPH.
Which will make some people mad.
Discovery gets the shakes at 70MPH.

1,200 miles - here I come.

I do like how I can nap in the back seat. I am 6'0" and it is not comfortable but I am getting used to it.

I may need to not pay hotels - to cover a new transmission or a rebuild.

What do you guys think the shudder from stopped to about 3 mph is?
As always thanks,
J

Ball joints?! Wild guess but is it almost like the death wobble that DI's get?

nahtanoj 06-28-2012 11:10 PM

not sure on the wobble. but we should get together when you get up here! there are a couple of us around Seattle. and Tahuya, WA isn't far away and an awesome off road park. hope all is well with the truck, and safe journeys.

stop by auto parts store and get this - it works Dr. Tranny Instant Shudder Fixx - also quiets them. Under $10.

I would suggest you grease and inspect both drive shafts as well as the flange on the front of the t/case. Have you checked the roto flex for cracks between the 6 bolts?

Motor mounts.

Maybe a bad miss. Any codes?

Wow, fabulous replies.
Thanks everyone!!
Mike, thank for your reply. I did not even know those parts existed.
Savannah, thanks for your advice on the trans additive. Will try it.
All, thanks for your kind replies. I'll check the MM's.

Well, I made it out of Boulder, CO UP the busy I-25 along the front.
Boulder was really smoky today with the fires. Sky Crane choppers were fueling and loading at the Boulder airport today.

Got through Wyoming. Lot of hills along I-80 in Wyoming.

Noticed when I go to cruise control at 68MPH and even hit a slight hill the D2 really downshifts. That's really bad.

I finally turned off the cruise and when I hit a hill I just backed off the gas and let the speed drop off. Like a big truck does.

Well, got to Ogden Utah.

Will probably stay here a day and then go all the way to Seattle in one trip.
Thank again for all the replies.

yes, I have one hell of a shake at 70 MPH.
Mike I bet you are right on about the drive shaft.
I stay below 70 no matter what.
Gotta make it home.

Take it slow, 60 or less, you have plenty of time, and you'll get better mpg. Maybe crawl under and peek at this rotoflex at the end of the rear drive shaft. You can back up on a curb to give yourself some room to move around. If you have to get a small shop to grease to U joints, or buy a grease gun, that would also be a good idea.

front driveshaft, loose ebrake drum, or over tightened ebrake. sometimes the locator screw backs out on the e brake drum and it gets loose, no matter how tight you tighten the driveshaft nuts it will still vibrate. In order to fix it you need to remove the driveshaft from the ebake drum and tighten the locator screw.
kinda late on this one tho...
You're almost home
