Default Vacuum advance unit replacement

Hi,
I got a new vacuum advance unit for my truck and I've run into a few problems! THe old one has a busted diaphram.

the one they sent is identical looking except the vacuum line port is 90 deg round from where the old one is. So when hooked up the vacuum line would be under the unit instead of at the side.

Anyway I fitted it and no fire. I thought well put the old one back on - no fire.
So now no truck!

Could the timing go out replacing this? All I have done is removed the dist cap, leads then the rotor & cover under the rotor. This allow me to push the vac arm off the pin inside the distributor to remove and replace the unit.

I think I put all the leads back right. 8 to the left of the front cap clamp then 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2, 1 - going clockwise.

Any help appreciated!

The rotor should be pointing to the #1 lead when the piston is at TDC on a compression stroke which is when your TDC timing mark is at the crank pointer.

I'd be willing to bet that you reinstalled your plug wires off by one position. And often, folks will retard the timing when their advance ceases to function, so if the advance is now functioning, but the dizzy is still purposely rotated back counterclockwise, then timing gonna be off. But check your leads as Tom indicated (or you can simply moved them all up, or back, one place on the dizzy to see if you just missed by one on reinstalling them...)

I installed the leads as per the manual but the manual has two diagrams. the one with the lead routing looks right with 8 & 1 closest to the radiator but the diagram just showing the plug order has the vacuum advance on the top side meaning 6 & 5 would be closest to the radiator.
I think the second diagram is not entirely correct.

Does my replacement unit seem okay? - maybe the old unit is wrong?

If I start messing with the order on the cap can that do any harm?

I'll check the timing position - thanks.

The firing order is: 1, 8, 4, 3, 6, 5, 7, 2

Starting with the #1 cylinder lead and working clockwise.

In it's proper position, the #7 lead should be right below the metal lifting eye for engine removal. In fact, I think it's a good idea to fish the lead through that eye just to mak sure your're closely timed before using a timing gun. If the #7 lines up with the lead fishe through that eye, your vehicle is capable of starting as the timing is definitely within range.

Thanks guys,
turns out they sent me the wrong unit - sent a 3 wire version, mine is two wire.
But i just went and set the motor to TDC and the leads were one plug out!
at least I have wheels again. Just got to wait for the correct part.
My 7 lines up perfectly with that eye but the magnacores are a straight plug for that one so the lead loops over the eye and not through or around it.

Cheers guys, you were both on the money.

i dont know why they had to have the 3 wire and 2 wire versions, they should have stuck with the 3 wire, with the ground. i think it would be much safer.
