Default What? Another tire thread? Yup!

Down to the final stages of shopping for tires. I'm just thinking I will go for a decent AT tire instead of a standard all season. Considering I will be using this truck mainly for ski trips, mountain bike trips, etc. HOPEFULLY maybe get to play off road a couple times too. I will be keeping the ride height stock though.
So, for a tire on the stock 18" wheels and stock suspension (with ACE) what are the thoughts on going 265/60/18? It opens up my choices to a few highly rated and lower priced tires than the usual suspects. My choices could then include:
Firestone Destination A/T: $171 (rated number 2 in the AT category)
Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor: $189 (rated number 6)
Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S: $151 (rated 12)
The Kumho Road VEnture SAT KL61 (rated #1) is available in 265/70/18 for $177.

I love tire threads...but maybe once I get mine I won't so much.

Needless to say, I don't have experience here, but from what i've heard/read, check out General Grabber AT2's...great value and great performance and wear according to a couple of other LR owners I know.

I have a few friends with different trucks but their years of off roading is extensive including racing... they both say that the Goodyear Silent Armor is the best all around you can get... I of course blew then of and went with the Dura -trac. but since that was not on your list.....

I'm 8 hours deep in my Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs and so far so good. I love the look, and am amazed at how smooth and quiet they are on the highway.

I've got the 18's as well and I'm getting 275/65/18 BFG Goodrich TK/O. But I'm also getting a 2 inch lift so I have the room to do it.

If you're going to go with a size that close to stock I'd go with General Grabber AT 2's or even TK/O's. Go for the duratracs if you want to spend a little more money.

I went with General Grabber AT2's about 1000 miles ago. I went stock size (255/55/18). I've been up to Lake Tahoe and saw a couple feet of snow fall while I was there. The Grabbers performed really well in the snow over the 2 or 3 days I was up there. Not a whole lot of experience on these tires so far, but --for what it is worth -- I'm really happy with my choice.

I have about 1500 miles on my Cooper Discoverer ATR's and really like them. 255/70/16 on stock suspenion. They are American made also. Very quiet for a AT tire.

Only 18" option for the Duratrac is 275/65/18 which seems too big, plus they are $240 each before shipping/install.
The General grabber has the stock size, but is $205 a piece.
The BFG's have a 265/65 but is $238.
So, even those get me back to my original question of exactly what will fit with no (or little) issue. All said and done though I do put a lot of weight into the rankings on Tirerack. Sure as anything, tires I've had at the top of the lists have been great, and ones towards the bottoms (mostly OE on new cars...not my picks) have been bad.

IMO get 16" rims and toss some cheapass Definity Dakota ATs on - $330+taxes for a set of 4 out the door at Pep Boys. The tires are made by Cooper and have the BFG TKO thread pattern. I like being cheap.

Not interested in that. I love the looks of the wheels I have, plus they are in good shape. I'd rather pay for better tires than pay for crappy tires plus wheels. And, I have more tires and wheels around the house than you could imagine. Hell, I have 3 sets of rims plus extra tires just for the Audi! 19" summer wheels/tires, 18" stock rims with snows, 18" track wheels with track tires... plus extras. I'm not sure my shed or garage would want to handle them (not to mention the wifey)
