What kind of transfer box fluid should I use?
 

Hi everyone...

I recently had to replace my transfer box on my Disco 2 2004 SE. It was previously owned by a leasing company and apparently they did not service it (meaning all inspections of its fluids) like it should. To make this story short, I am replacing the box because of internal damages caused.
Fortunately, I was able to get one at Roverland
(http://www.roverlandparts.com/index.aspx) reasonably priced.

My question is...what is the type of transfer box fluid I should use? Can it be a synthetic oil of its kind?

Amsoil 75w90 is the stuff to use imho.

Also some people use the heavier weight cause it clings to the gears better and can quite down the gears too. BG makes great products, but cannot be purchased at any local parts stores. Royal purple can be bought at O'Reilly's, but I have not found the heavier weight in stock. I have the heavier weight in my TC case and it has stopped my slow leak and runs quieter.

I am using Wal-Mart brand syn blend, 75w-140.
Its cheap and it works great, I have it in both diffs and t-case.
I also change my fluids once a year.

Has anyone sourced what refiner Wal-Mart(Coastal, I think) gets there oil from? Just curious.

It is re-refined oil, same stuff the US military uses, I used to work for the company that re-refined the used oil and made new oil.
It is sold under many different names, including Super Tec.
And just so we are clear, oil NEVER wears out, it just gets saturated with contaminates and the additives wear out.
Distill it, add new additives and BAM!!, brand new oil.
Motor oil, ATF and gear lube can all be re-refined.

Ok good to know. I meant to say the Wal-Mart brand was Super Tech.
I was just reading on Google that is manufactured by Penzoil, but it can change from time to time.

I figured it had to be decent oil, because rednecks at shopping at Wal-Mart cant have their Ford F-150's dropping pistons lefty & right! Ye Know:D

Does it need to be synthetic or can it be regular mineral oil? i just changed all my fluids and used regular 75w90 Valvoline high performance. Wondering if i should switch it out for a synthetic blend?

We had a demonstration from our BG guy and he mentioned that Walmart oil is really good. It seems they don't want lawsuits so they made sure the additive package met higher then average standards.

Supertech and coastal oils are made by warren distribution. Supertech gear oils have tested out of spec before but that was a year or so ago. If you must use a conventional gear oil use the rotella 85w140 from walmart.
