Default What is this leak?

Hi Everyone

I am looking at a 2001 disco 2. It seem to run great, body is in reasonable shape. It has 93k on it. Unfortunately the maintenance records are not available. I had it on ramps to check if it was equipped with a CDL, it was! But Then I discovered the leak in the pictures. What is it? At first I thought it was coolant... perhaps a bad head gasket. But it didn't smell like coolant, infact it didn't smell of anything. its oily and kinda grungy. I never did see exactly where it was coming from. I am thinking it might be transmission fluid, because the transmission lines are running up into the area where the fluid appears to be coming from. I would really appreciate any opinions on this, I don't want my first Land Rover experience to be a disaster.

Also the TC, ABS and decent control lights are on. Because of the leak and the lights I got the price down to 6k.

I really appreciate any assistance!

What part of the truck is this?
The best way to find a leak is to degrease and really clean the area and see if it starts leakingagain and then trace it back.
It will be difficult to to since you havent bought it.

In the picture you can see the oil pan and the Transmission lines. It was because of this I was thinking of transmission fluid.

Tranny fluid is some where between red and brown with a very distinct small.
I agree with the last post, you really need to degresae then engine and power scrub it so you can see where it is leaking from. Make sure not to get the ECU wet. Also get a little of the fluid on a white piece of paper towel so yo can get a better idea of what it is.

next picture

I know its not an easy one. But what do you think, good buy or not?

also the fluid appeared to be mixed with an oily crud of some sort. It was an orangish color, but like I said there was no smell of antifreeze.

Thanks
