You guys who live where it is "cold" crack me up. How cold does it get in GA? 60? maybe 50?The numbers on motor oil go like this...
5w30= it will pump easily through the engine at 5 degrees F and give the same protection as a 30 weight oil.
10w40= 10 degrees and protects like a 40 weight.
0w20= it will pump at o degrees and protect like a 20 weight oil.
The lower the bottom number the less resistance inside the crank case when cold and it helps engine manufactures meet EPA requirements. The Prius says to use 0w20, so does Ford, some Hondas and others. The less resistance inside the crankcase the better the MPG. BUT...the lower the numbers the thinner the oil and the more you burn oil.
Lets remember that oil thins out as it gets hot. So if your car uses oil than a thicker oil is what you need.
In cold climates you need a thinner oil so that it pumps faster at startup and reduces emissions by reducing resistance in the sump. The crankshaft is partaly submerged in oil inside the sump.
If it only gets down to 50 in your area or maybe down to 30 twice a year, you can use any oil you want 0w20 to 20w50.
But basiclly the FIRST numberis the actual weight, or thickness of the motor oil and the SECOND number is the amount of protection that it offers.

LOL! Yeah I kind of felt the same way, I live in TX and well it gets into the 20°s &30°'s really only a handful of times here in the winter. I use 10w40 in the winter and switch to 20w50 after about April when my next change comes up. No one that owns a LR should really be concerned about fuel economy anyway LOL. I have a full time oil pressure gauge and noticed I have better pressure with the 20w50 when the ambient is over about 75°F.

In mulitviscosity oils the first number is the low temp viscoisty, and indicates the viscosity and flow at various "winter" temperatures, ranging from -5 F for 25w to -30 F for 0w.
The right hand number is the viscosity at 210 degrees F.
"Amount of protection" it's going to offer depends on the type of oil, kind of engine you have and other factors. You can't just say 50w offers more protection than 40w.

What is even more important then the Brand of oil is the oil filter. There are some real cheap oil filter on the market that don't work well with our Rovers. Either use the facyory filter which is my least favorite, a Mobil 1 or the K&N 3001, all of which will keep your oil cleaner and not allow dry starts.

Well, by "type" I meant viscosity spread, for one. The greater the spread the more additives and the quicker, usually, it breaks down and needs to be changed. But shear is a factor as well, which you can get at higher viscosities depending on the type of engine you have.

As for filters, yeah, stay away, far far away from Fram. In addition to Mobile 1 and K&N, Wix filters are as highly rated in filter analysis. I use them because they are generally cheaper for me.

I seem to be the only one but I do Mo1 0W-40 year round as it's the truest (group V base / hydrocracked... I think) synthetic easily avail.

I usually pick up a Mobil 1 filter but see Fram filters nearly everywhere, what is the major downer on them? I have almost had to go with them on occasion because of the unavailability of some others.

On my next oil change I am switching to Mobil 1 0w30. I was waiting until all my leaks were taken care of before making the switch.

Cheers,

Pete

It is the anti-drainback valve. It doesnt work very well. I had always used Fram oil filters until I bought my Rover and then I had to stop using them because the engine would always have a dry start because the oil filter would be empty after sitting over night.
I use Mopar (made by Purolator) oil filters and no more dry starts. Even after the truck has sat unused for 3 weeks.

I'm using Mobil 0w 40 with K&N filter or the Mobil whichever they have at the time, no problems, running strong.

I think $10 for a oil filter is a rip off. If I was going to go 15,000 miles between oil changes ok, but not for the average person.
Purolator, Wix and NAPA are just fine.
