What to watch out for before buying Disco II?
Hey folks,
I'm going to buy a 99 Disco II next month and I am wondering what to watch out for? Basically I'm looking to find out what questions I should ask, what I should look for, and anything I should watch out for. Now, I am familiar with documentation and smog stuff, but I need to find out about specifics. Like....
What things start to go bad at a certain number of miles?
What are the most common problems ecountered by owners?
What oils do you guys put in?
What mods should you put on first?
What octane rating is best?
You get the idea? Because when it comes to PM's I need to be a real perfectionist. Since this vehicle has a cult following I thought I should ask you folks, THE EXPERTS. If there is a guide in here somewhere please direct me to it. i'm eager to learn.
Thanks

Things that go out at certain mileage, mileage has nothing to do with problems for the most part
how it was maintained will determine what will go out and when.
The big problem with the Disco II is the ABS/traction control.
Oiling is a weak point for this motor (old Buick motor from 60's)
I use full synthetic 5w40 winter 10w40 summer.
You don't have to use a synthetic but whatever you use keep it changed or it will gum up
the inside of the motor. Change it by how you drive and where drive not by miles.
Mods- how are you going to use your Disco? After you have it awhile you can see what you need.
Octane- this is a hotly debated topic, I have to use 91 and up as I have had my Disco chipped.
Do a search under octane.
The net has alot of history on Land Rovers and parts suppilers have books.

before you buy. make sure the owner has maintained the records for the vehicle. A rover that has not been taken care of is a nightmare waiting to happen. Oil type depends on where you are, how you drive. the big thing is to change it frequently. I have and will continue to use the 3mts, 3000miles. Mods are based by the way you want to use the vehicle. fuel I have always used the best I can get hold of. 91plus. maintainence is the key to a great rover. find problems by knowing your own vehicle. do as much as you can yourself. saves money and you get the best views of your vehicle. You can replace parts as they need, rather than repair them when they break.
hope it helps. gotta love a rover. duboff
