Default What's Knocking ?

Any idea what's gone wrong? This noise started last week after starting up and running for a few minutes. I figured it was something loose and drove home to inspect. Nothing loose or broken, no fluid issues, no warning lights, noise loudest at bellhousing area did a trans fluid and filter change but no change. Noise goes away when put into gear but P and N it's there.
Is it possible to unbolt the torque converter and start the engine to isolate the noise? Video is bad but I was going for sound over sight.

I did find out the trans was replaced w/rebuilt in '07 due to the driveshaft bite. No issues in the 15 months I've owned it till now.

doesn't sound good...seems like it has to be a transmission problem if it goes away when you shift into drive. maybe try tranny fluid/filter change..that's really the only thing I can think of...good luck.

Default What's Knocking ?

Thanks for the reply's so far. I did the trans fluid and filter change, fluid like new and nothing alarming in pan or filter. Had a chance to work on it some more today and noticed while attempting to remove converter to flex plate bolts something felt odd. I marked a line on the flex plate and on the flywheel then watched as I put pressure on the converter bolt each direction (tighten or loosen). Well I think I may have found the problem, either the flex plate is broken or loose where it bolts to the crank. Check out the video and let me know what you think.
Now the million dollar question, does the trans need to be pulled completely or is there a short cut ?

Any input is appreciated.

Default Cracked flexplate

Ok, so I found a deal on a flywheel and flexplate and bought it. Price was cheap enough to have a flywheel incase I needed it. The flexplate is another story. The parts only have 79k on them and I tested them with a crack detection kit. The flywheel was fine but the flexplate has begun to crack. Ordered new parts for mine and will start teardown soon. Shops quoted from 850.00 to 1,800.00 to replace the plate. Looks like I will plan on replacing the flexplate in my '99 too, just hope it will wait for spring.
