Window tint
Can anyone tell me if I dare attempt to do a tint job on my 96 disco? It has very little if any tinting as the back ones are the same as the front. I would like to get the standard dark black for the back windows and rear doors. Is this somthing I could do myself? If so could you give me some tips and tricks?
get the precut tint from xtremecity on ebay ... our windows are really easy to tint since they are flat and straight the alpine windows were the hardest to tint ...
) buy tint if you don't already have it. If you are going to buy some, I'd recommend the Gila Ultra series. The rest of it seems to scratch or tear easily.
2) Go to autozone or advanced, and buy BOTH the large and small Gila Tinting kits. (like 9 bux total). w/ these you'll have: 2 retractiable razors, 2 spray bottles, 1 large squeegy, 1 small squeegy, 1 credicard sized squeegy, 1 bottle of concentrated film aid. Also have a roll of electical tape handy.
3) Mix the film aid as specified on bottle.
4) Sand the WOODEN edge of the creditcard sized squeegy.
5) Clean all windows VERY well. the smallest spec of dust or hair will show in the end.
Side windows:
6) Spray film aid on outside of window, spread tint smoothly and evently across the glass, and cut roughly around it. Make sure the clear coating, not the tint is facing out. Give it like an extra 2"s or so on each side. tape each peice of tint to the window to make sure it stays in place.
7) Using razor, carefully cut the tint to the appropriate size. Don't worry the razor won't scratch the glass unless you put all of your weight into it, which you shouldn't do. On the front windows, it should go right down to the rubber sealer on the bottom. Also, I would advise cutting the top at the top edge of the glass. Once its dry, you can go back & cut about a 1/4 inch strip down from the edge, so it doesn't catch when rolling the window up & down.
8) If your good w/ the cutting this step is optional. Spray the inside of the window w/ film aid, press the (still unpeeled) tint against the glass, and slid it into place. Make any appropriate trimmings.
9) pull the tint off the glass, and spray the inside of the window until it is throughoutly saturated. press two peices of electrical tape togather, pinching the corner of the tint in between them. If done properly, when you pull the tape apart, it will pull the tint & clear sheet apart. expose about 1/3 of the sticky side of the tint. DONT touch it or let dirt get on it.
10) apply exposed sticky side to satuated glass, get in it place, then unpeel the rest of the clear sheet off, sticking the tint to the window as you go.
11) Ideally, the tint will now slide easily on the glass, so you can get it in place. If it doesn't CAREFULLY peal the tint back in the place that its sticking, and spray the hell out of it as you do it. If it leaves any adhesive behind, scrap it and start over.
12) Once your tint is in place, use the rubber side of the credit card squeegy, and start gently squeegying the water out, starting in the middle. Once you get a bit out and the tint starts sticking, switch to the regular squeegy. you should be starting in the middle, and pulling every bit of air and water out the edges. When most of the water is out, and you just have some fine bubble, use the sanded edge of the creditcard squeegy to get the small bubbles out. When there are absolutely no bubbles left, you are done.
13) follow the same process for the side-rear windows, minus the part about cutting out a strip against the top edge (obviously). And don't worrry if flim aid gets everywhere, it won't hurt anything.
Rear Window:
14) Now i paid to have this one done, but the guy at the tinting place did it as follows.
15) spray back window, get tint in place, cut it roughly to size.
16) Using heat gun, heat the tint slightly, so it will mold to the shape of the window. When molded, cut it exactly to fit.
17) Now the guy i saw do it, peeled the tint on the outside, while it was sitting on the glass. He peeled it completely, soaked it, then gathered it up in his arms, climbed in the car, and carefully started at the top corner & applied it.
The rear window won't need that (this was from my car)
