Default Defender 2.5TD -> 200 TDi

Hello all. I'm a newbie here, based in Switzerland!

I recently purchased a Defender 2.5 TD and I am looking to swap the engine to a 200TDi.

I've been looking all over the web, finding good sources for what to do etc... (per example; 200TDi into Defender - some useful info - by Glencoyne Engineering). It seems thought I'm not finding any good engines to do the swap, there is one for sale on LR Parts but it's the 200TDi for the discovery...
Is it such a hassle to place a 200TDi from a Discovery into the Defender, knowing that there are some new parts to weld and modify in sort that the engine will fit properly and its accessories??
Any of you here has done it or has had someone done it and can give advice?

Thanks a lot!!

JC

Welcome to the forum JC.

I’m no way a diesel engine subject matter expert but why wouldn’t you want a 300Tdi vs. a 200Tdi engine?
I’ve read in various LR forums that the diesel owners rank the LR diesel engines as this...
300Tdi > Td5 > 200Tdi > Puma (utter crap from what I’ve read).

Hopefully someone can answer your question.

The 200tdi out of a defender is a direct swap, for 2.5TD. 300tdi is a whole different animal, bulkhead diferences were made to accomodate, l believe you have to change trans, from LT77 to R380, LT won't hold up to extra horsepower. Not saying it's not worth exploring, just more to it. The only changes, while going from a 2.5TD to 200tdi was return fuel line from pump (easy mod, just cut line and add rubber hose to different style connector), mounting air cleaner housing (drill three holes in inner fender, no biggy) and routing of accelerator pedal cable underneath brake boost. I went with 200tdi out of defender and it came with entire set up, rad/inner cooler, turbo hoses/pipes, fuel filter housing (different), rad shroud, air filter housing, etc. The swap was one day out, one day dropping it in. I'd have had it drive able the first night, but the radiator was cracked during shipping...so that set me back a few days. But, Rovers North had me up and running within a couple days.

The 200tdi out of a Dll has a bit of conversion work involved, exhaust turbo pipe, cooling hoses and a few other things (not sure about the trans either?).

The increase in power, from 2.5TD to 200tdi, is substantial (85 hp to 110 hp). I believe the 300tdi is somewhere around 125 hp.

The 200tdi makes driving the 110 a lot more enjoyable. Yesterday we had 25/30 mile an hour winds and normally this would force me to back roads going home...but not anymore...the 200tdi just purred along and l had pedal to spare. I have a roof rack and light bar, also...and when they're off...it's even better.

l've not driven it with roof top tent in place, removed before winter. But, l'm expecting it to be okay. Since...it's not a "l'm in a hurry" type of vehicle anyway.

Go over to "Defender Source. Com" and ask around there for info. You'll get a ton and you'll find engines pop up there quite often, too. And check facebook market place for engines.

Good luck.
