Made some more progress today. Picked up another 5.3L LM4 with 124,000 miles for only $650 and they threw in some extra parts. It's a little dirty on the outside, but oil looks clean. Also bought a ZF 4HP24 for $150 to replace the 4HP22 that's currently in the 2002 Disco. Also managed to find a Chevy truck harness on eBay for $225 that I am going to convert for this build. All that's left to find is the GM ECM and a few other odds and ends.

I’m patiently waiting for a link to swap in an LS. My 4.6 still runs but has low compression and needs to be yanked. I have purchased a 2002 3500 with a 6.0 and a 2004 2500 hd. Both trucks run but are wrecked. Both trucks are low miles and I couldn’t pass them up. |
Happy Thanksgiving! I too would like some info on this swap, our ole girl is tired! I filled out the form also. do you have a website yet with more information? im going to need something soon.

Well... I'm excited. I dont think that cherry picker will go up high enough without putting the 'ol girl on jacks though:/ |
Update: The LS Rover is still going strong. Spent a bit of time diagnosing an issue where the engine was slightly down on power. It turned out that it was a bad knock sensor, but it did not start throwing codes immediately. Apparently it is a fairly common issue on these engines. The knock sensors are under the intake manifold, but it should not be too difficult.
Otherwise, the truck has been running good. It had been sitting for a while before we did this conversion (cappuccino in oil), so we have been working through a lot of the ‘normal’ maintenance. We have replaced the rear brakes and done some other odds and ends. We have started going through the new engine that I found for my overland truck. It had good compression and everything looked good when we pulled off the oil pan. For good measure, we are going to replace the water pump and thermostat. I think I’ve found a good, cheap 4.8L for the other build, so that is coming along as well. I’ve been working on the wiring harness and the new design will be a lot better than the older one. Much more streamlined and about as plug-and-play as possible. The adapters are coming along and will be ready soon. |
Woo!
I'm so excited for this kit! I should probably fill out one of those forms you've shared with the forum :dunno: |

Also, forgot to mention, this new build will be using a drive-by-wire throttle instead of drive-by-cable. This is a little bit more complicated, but it will fix one thing that has always bothered me about the Discovery: the factory cruise control. Cruise control will be electric, which will get rid of the vacuum pump and the cables and be a much cleaner install. Furthermore, I've also been working on making the temperature gauge in the instrument cluster work like it should. This way the needle would be in the red a much lower temperature -- maybe about 220 degrees, which would prevent many of the problems that come from relying on the factory gauge. |
I couldn't remember if I'd filled out the form, so I did it again. On the accessories, I'd like a mix. GM power steering pump for sure just cause of cost and reliability. I've never had a problem with a LR AC compressor, so I'd keep that. Alternator I'd go either way. Doesn't make any difference.
I'd love to do this to my girlfriend's Disco. Her dad even has a trashed truck with a good motor. |
