Default 2001 Range HSE 4.6

I have a 2001 Range Rover HSE 4.6 that i cant get the steering to feel right. It feels very loose and it feels squirrelly on the highway. I cant go over 55 or 60 with our it shaking. Also when I hit a bump on the road or un even pavement i can really feel it in the steering wheel. I have replaced the tie rod ends and also the steering dampner. I also have tightned the steering box by adjusting the screw on the top. This helped. Any advice?

Tyres next? - Wheel size? I know the P38 prefers 16" wheels to 18" wheels on bitumen.

Shaking could be that you threw a wieght so you will have to have all tires rebalanced if you have not done it already. A simple wieght can cause such a problem as far as shaking at high speeds.

Has the steering been this way since you owned it, or did it suddenly start doing this? If you haven't already, taking it in for an alignment might help. When I first purchased mine it was all over the road, had the wheels aligned and and it helped a lot. However, it is still a bit squirly.

I've done a lot of looking around, and my bushings are fine and I replaced the steering damper as well. I was watching an episode of "Wheeler Dealers" and they were having the same issue with a Discovery. They put the rover on a lift and with one person turning the steering wheel side to side and another underneath checking for play. It ended up needing a new steering box because it was so worn. I'm almost certain that is what mine needs and could very well be whats causing your problem too. However, if you haven't already have your tires re-balanced as suggested above and take it in for an alignment. If that hasn't helped it, then it will be time to check for play in the steering system. Also, if/when you take it in for an alignment, ask them if they notice any play in the system and describe your issue. They might be able to shed some light on it.
