Well guys I've got a few newb questions for you. I am going to go look at a couple of RR sometime this week. 1 is a 1998 HSE the other is a 2004. 1: What kind of fuel economy am I looking at 2: How mechanically reliable are they(I've heard bad things on this subject) 3: What kind of life expectancy should I expect. I'm looking at these vehicles as a primary vehicle for daily driving and off roading in the mountains. Any info would really be a help.

I'm guessing you mean 04 HSE as well?

Always go for the newer one - especially if its your daily driver. Presumably there is a substantial price difference?

I don't know how much on the price but yes. I would assume almost 20k diff.

Just my opinion, but if this is going to be your primary transportation, I'd recommend finding a good deal on a certified 2004 - 2006 HSE, (or one that's available with an extended warranty as a minimum). In terms of reliability, it's kind of a crap shoot.Some folks are plagued with failures, others not as much, but the key is not to end up out on a limb financially keeping it on the road; there is not an inexpensive repair to be had.

go with the 04. much more reliable, youll spend the difference in price keeping the 98 on the road within 2 years. plus youre looking at about 100 more hp and better fuel milage with the 04, not to mention its a much nicer and smoother ride.

Well the 04 is gone. the 98 is still there I went and looked at it today and it seems a little rough around the edges. So I begining to gather that the mechanical reliabilty on this thing is going to be a little less than stellar. What kind of MPG would it get?

foot out of the gas youre looking tops of 16, you will have trouble with this car though, its 3 generations old, not a very reliable engine managment system

I seriously doubt you will spend "the difference" in 2 years buying the older range. the 98= 10 to 15K tops the 04 probably 45k.Thats$30k, alot of money!! The older range rovers are not any less reliable then the newer cars. The engine management system is very reliable. The problems usually asociated with the early (p38a) range rovers revolve around the air suspension system, which is prone to failure and expensive to repair.
