Default Installing a new rear view mirror (1998)

I've purchased a new rear view mirror for my 1998 range rover 4.6hse and I was wondering if you guys could provide me with some help. I've taken the front and back covers off of the original mirror and exposed the wires. I also managed to disconnect the wires from the original mirror. However, it seems I can't figure out how to get it off of it's mount on the windshield.

Could you guys help me take off the original mirror and mount the new one?

You will see a metal tab on the bottom of where it mount to the window, that needs to be pulled away from the window as you carefully but firmly apply pressure downward on the mirror. BE CAREFUL though as too much force and you risk cracking the windshield ( I did)

Hi,

I have pulled on the tab both ways, away and towards the window and no luck, any special tool?

Default RE: Installing a new rear view mirror (1998)

I just ordered a new auto-dimming, compass, and updated HomeLink (rolling code support) for my HSE. It is on the way so I have not removed my old mirror yet. However, I have removed rear view mirrors and replaced them on some of my other vehicles. I do not expect this one to be much different.
Carefully grab onto the metal bracket that is glued to the wind shield with vise grips so that the handle is parallel with the glass. Then wrap the vise grips with a rag so you do not scratch the glass. Use a quick twisting action to "unscrew" it from the glass. Should come off fairly easily, but might have to jerk it a couple of times.
Good Luck!

Update: I just removed the old camlock windshield adapter. This was even easier than removing a wedge adapter. Instead of the vise grips I used a large crescent wrench and fit it around the square center button that sticks out from the base. It was far enough away from the glass that I didn't have to worry about scratches. I gave it a good twist and it came right off with no problems at all.
