Default Replacing EFI COntrol unit

Hi all.

Could anyone point me in right direction how to replace the Electronic Fuel Injection Control Unit. What is the procedure doing it right, what should be done before and after.

No programming require even though I replaced it with different part number?
I put 3.9L ECU on me 4.2L Range Rover Classic. I've heard somewhere that ECU should be reset after replacing it. The thing is that fuel consumption increase by 30-50% and idling is not stable especially while on stopping at traffic lights.
Any idea?
