Steering problem
 

Hi,
When I drive my RR P38 above 80 the there is a violent vibration on the steering wheel. I have recently changed the steering damper thinking this was the cause but I have the same problem. Can anyone explain what could be the cause?

You're driving a p38 range rover over 80 mph, that's why!

Tires? Mine used to vibrate at higher speeds. I got new tires and now it rides nice and smooth. It does still shake a little at 135. jk.

Your bushings could be on the way out. I would start with making sure the tires are inflated correctly and that the tires are rotated regularly. Check for uneven wear as well as getting the front end re-aligned.

I don't think it should do that, I had mine at 90MPH the other day and it was smooth as silk!

It could be the tires or also the tie rod ends, they do go bad and most people overlook them when doing routine upkeep. You may also have a losse steering gear box but I am willing to bet on one of the other two first.

I was experiencing the exact same problem. Seemed as though magically at about 45mph all hell would break loose. My RR certified mechanic gave me a grocery list of things that can cause that. Those included, worn tie rods, worn ball joints, bad tires, bad wheel hub, steering box adjustment, and even a universal joint. If the air suspension has been converted to coils, it can change the pitch,camber of the entire vehicle, which makes the U-joint wear out very quickly.
In my case, the left wheel hub was worn giving it a not so pleasant shimmy. After it was replaced, I got new tires and it rides like a new vehicle. ;)
