Default Thinking of Buying 2008 Range Rover

I have driven Mercedes for the past 15 years and have been very pleased. I'm thinking of giving my wife my S-class and moving into a Range Rover.

I like the full size model, not the Sport. In the day, I guess the Rover V8 had a reputation for blowing head gaskets and letting cylinder barrels loose in the engine. Basically a lot of overheating issues and constant attention.

Now, it seems that the later models are using the BMW 4.4L M62 engine. I had a 740il with that engine and will NEVER have another V8 BMW. It was no where near as nice as my Mercedes and the oil leaks were never-ending. Got rid of it before I had to do the infamous timing chain replacement.

So, how does everyone like the Rover with the BMW engine? I'm worried that I'd be swapping one type of problem (Rover V8) for another in the BMW.

Candid replies are welcome.

Interesting...I was fairly certain I read that it had the M62 engine. The Jaguar V8 has its own problems, plastic chain tensioners, bad guides, etc.

Wonder why Rover didn't just install a 350 Chevrolet V8?

They switched over in 05 or 06 can't remember which year for sure to the Jag AJ v8.

Probably since GM wasn't even using the 350 anymore in 08 lol

Yeah, I checked. For 2006 they began using that Jaguar V8 engine so that would be the engine in a 2008. So, I guess the question is that is the Jag V8 any good?

I've read a lot of stories about the Jag V8 needing timing chains, tensioners and guides at 100k.

The motors in the '06 and later are good. Very few problems that I have seen. I cringe when a M62 comes in.

Ok - I feel better about an 08 now. No way I want to fool with that BMW engine again. The EPA should regulate those things because of the cumulative oil leaks. I had an 85 Suburban 454 that didn't leak a drop and an 01 BMW 7-series that would leave a mess like you never seen before!

The BMW M62 reminds me of the Northstar V8. Keep making them long after they are regarded as junk and trouble.
