What size bolts secure the starter motor on 1986 V8's?

Just a Tip: Make sure to clean out the allen head bolt heads and make sure to press in the 8mm allen socket firmly before your round it off.

Thanks for helping me get well prepared for the job.Vehicle is stranded in middle of wet field dangling from an engine crane, need to drag the garage to it so the less I have to carry the better! "clean out the allen head bolt heads" made me chuckle, the amount of mud up there probably means the best tools would be a metal detector and a JCB digger

Bolts removed & starter hanging in place, just got the main + terminal to undo as didn't have the right spanner with me, so will have to go back again.

I noticed there is a metal heat shield just in front of the terminals of the starter, between it and the exhaust pipe.

It looks tricky to maneuver the starter past this heat shield when removing. Can anyone who has done the job before, give any tips..

I think this is the style of heat shield you have:pointup:. That heat shield has to be removed before you can get the starter out.
Just a bolt and a nut, have a look you'll see the hardware that has to come off. When you find them, spray the fasteners with some penetrating oil before you try to remove. Good Luck! :cheers:

If so, it lists one screw holding it on
"Screw FS106255L[V8 - EFi - flanged head - M6 x 25]"

- so I guess it's just the same really?

The heat shield in the ebay listing is made to protect the motor mount and not the starter. It's possible someone made the shield. If you can't figure how to remove it, just post a pic of what you are looking at.

Another heat shield option ( ERR3601 ) is in the pic above. It bolts on the bottom and clamps to the solenoid. This is normally found on later RRC and DIs.

I had an '85 years ago so I'm not really too sure about the heat shield but if it is #4 like you think, check the motor mount bracket. The bolt holding the heat shield in place may pass through the motor mount bracket. Check the bracket from the front. Feel around for the head of a single bolt. I know that on much later Rovers like the DI and DII there is a much larger heat shield that has a clip for attachment to the starter as well as a bolt that passes through the motor mount bracket. On those trucks the head of the bolt is 10mm.

Looking back at that diagram, I think the heat shield OverRover is showing is what is on your truck. Take a look at #12 because that spacer could be causing confusion. I want to say the bolt that holds the heat shield, #11 in to #12 is a 1/2" whereas the spacer is 9/16th." I just don't recall a stud, #15, being used but like I said, it's been a long time since I had my '85.

The plain, angular heat shield you're talking about is for the down pipe and that may be mounted to the motor mount bracket.
