1996 land rover se7 overheating problem
Hi there i just bought my first land rover and don't really know what's going on. i started by replacing the thermostat because the last owner told me that he has had replaced it already so i took the old one out and it was backwards. the i did the oil change and the oil looked like mud already and then i sort of test or check the radiator to see if the water was flowing and it seems to be working properly meaning that the water pump is making the water flow so to me it meant that the radiator and water pump are working. but it still overheats. can somebody help me out here please.

what do you mean by: " these are pretty hard on the top end and they warp ". these truck hasn't got any new gasket. just imagine this. when i bought the truck and i check the oil the oil looked like sludge.so i changed the oil and oil filter i even took the oil pan out and clean the oil pan and the interior of the engine and that's when i knew that there was gonna by more surprises coming up. but I'm ok with getting dirty i like to learn everything about my cars and trucks. im really hopping not to be my head gaskets but if they are then i guess I'm just gonna do the all engine rebuilt.
by the way thanks for viewing my ad and leaving your thoughts.

Do what you want, we're just telling you whats most common; especially when your oil looks like sludge. What does you coolant look like? If your oil is sludge than most likely, get your top end rebuilt. It's a suggested "to do" after 60k miles as preventative anyway. Take the advice or not.

He has a '96 D1 SE7. Not a D2. I would start with a radiator flush to make sure the radiator is flowing properly. Check your coolant hoses as well. If you are losing coolant, then I would suspect the head gaskets. But if you are not losing any coolant, then you probably have blockage in the radiator or hoses. Also make sure the space between the radiator and the A/C is free of debris.

How about pressure test the coolant system? If the system can't hold pressure and there is air/water blowing out of places radiator fluid isn't supposed to be, that'd sum it up quick. Bottom line, when Any engine under load looses it's coolant and overheats there is a high probability the heads will get warped.
