2001 discovery front differential problem
Hey everyone!
I have a 2001 Discovery and I was driving the other day when I started hearing a high pitched scratching noise that became more frequent the harder I accelerated... Also upon acceleration the car would vibrate violently. I was close to a shop and brought it there where they did an inspection and diagnosed it as a busted front differential. I'm waiting for a quote since they have to ask a partner shop since they don't do differentials.
So what I wanted to know is if anyone could estimate how much I should expect to pay to rebuild the front differential, and if anyone could recommend a mechanic in the San Francisco area. Thank you so much for reading and I really appreciate the help!

Are you sure it was not your front drive shaft starting to fail, have you ever rebuilt/replaced it yet for up-graded u-joints?
I would say$200 to $300 in labor and parts from $100 to $400 depending on how good a price they find on a used 3rd. member.
You might want to send me your number cause I bet they will hit you with a really high estimate that you shouldn't be paying.
By the way, how mechanical are you?

I'm not sure if the u-joint (universal joint?) has ever been replaced and I honestly have no idea what it could be. This is actually my girlfriends car and she has no idea what maintenance has been performed.
I can perform simple maintenance like changing oil or brakes but I've never touched anything inside an engine or drivetrain. I have tools, a floor jack and stands, and I could go get a service manual, but I don't think my girlfriend would trust me to do that lol
Anyway my number is 415.987.1129 I'll reply to the thread again when I get an estimate from those guys. Thanks!
