im have a problem with the Landy ( get the joke's out off the way. Yes the big problem is its a disco and im the driver of it lol )
the brake pedal went straight to the floor
now have a hard pedal with engine off, pedal goes straight to the floor when the engine is running.
So today I put in new brake pads all round
It don't have any leaks. If I pull the vacuum hose off the servo the pedal doesn't drop. Put my finger over the hose and it has good suction. Put it back on the servo pedal goes to the floor.
If I pump the pedal it goes hard again but then goes back down.
I will try bleeding it tomorrow. Just wondered if anyone has any other ideas on what could be wrong with it.

Sounds like a failing master cylinder.

 

I agree with Disco Mike.. sounds like a master cylinder failure.

I am curious why you put new pads on, was it because they were worn out??

 

I agree with the others. If there are NO leaks, and NONE of your hoses are expanding under pressure, then the master cylinder is the most likely culprit.

The seals could be holding with just foot force, but as soon as the booster can provide assist, it could be causing fluid to blow past the seals. Has anybody topped off the fluid lately (possible contamination?)

 

The were a bit spongey before. Then I when off roading which involved water.
Then all of the above happen. The brake pads needed changing is I put new ones in hoping that was the problem but they are still the same. The m/c it full of fluid

 

I have a 06 range rover, i just replaced the rear brakes and passenger rear brake caliper and bleed out the rear brakes and now my pedal is extremely spongey and wants to go to the floor any ideas

 

Don't fully depress the pedal or you could damage the seals in the master cylinder (if using the pedal method to bleed always place a block of wood under the pedal to avoid full travel). If you're lucky and the MC isn't damaged then you may have air in the system still. Re-bleed again and then do it again if necessary. I bleed twice and it's worth the effort. Hopefully it'll be ok. You may need to power bleed the ABS pump. There are a few threads on here about doing this on the Discovery 2, so perhaps looking in the Range Rover forum and the Disco2 forum might help you to work out how to do it on your truck.

 

Add another vote for air in the system.

 

when you press down on the brake pedal does it sound like hissing from under the dash?
