Default Check Engine codes say misfire, however engine is running great

Context, I drive a land Rover Discovery 2,1999
164k miles

The check engine light was on, my mechanic told me (well some of his new help, I guess) just said "said misfire. I cleared it, drive it for a bit and see if it comes back" so I did, immediately came back on as I was getting home. Flashing this time (only flashing occasionally, otherwise solid) so I guess it's a misfire issue? After reading some forums I've realized how serious this is and how he shouldn't have let me leave without fixing the issue, however the engine is also running perfect. No stutter, no hesitation, nothing that would remotely indicate a misfire. Is there anything else that could throw those codes? Am I just missing the misfire? It's running as good as it ever has. Any help would be greatly appreciated (all just in time for smog check as well)

Lots of things could cause the flashing light, and you really shouldn't be driving it in that condition. You need to have the codes read to properly diagnose the issue(s).

Well I did get them read, the guy said the codes read misfire piston 7, then sent me on my way like it was no big deal. Going to go back, was just looking for some advice, or if anyone has experienced that kindof read without any clear issues with the way the engine runs, like you would have with a misfire. Either way I can't drive it much, it's not smoged.

That could be anything from a bad plug to a bad plug lead to a bad coil to a vacuum leak or an injector leak. It can be hard to detect a single misfire by how the engine feels if it's infrequent.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Maybe it's just occasionally, but only under load. At idle it's easy to hear and after idling for about 10 minutes there wasn't a single hiccup. Either way, she's at my mechanic right now and getting the care she needs. But my good guy, not the one who sent me away with a serious engine issue

I bought an Ultra-Gauge from ebay, basically an OBDII code reading device that shows you live data as you drive. Lets you delete those pesky “check engine” codes easily if you know they aren’t a problem.
best $90 bucks you’ll spend as a Disco owner
