Got 3 codes simultaneously today from my 2001 P38 (4.6 engine)
P1172 - engine running rich
P1175 ??
P0734 - Gear 4 ratio Incorrect
From reading other posts here and other boards - it looks as if they could be related to the MAFS.
Now I DO HAVE K&N air filter on this rangie I see people blaming them for MAFS failure can somebody tell me why?
I have been using K&N for 35 years !!!!
I have cleared the codes and will see if they re-appear (which I assume they will if the MAFS has failed ????
Regards
James

K&N filters will kill the newer style Bosch MAF's, you just bought yourself a new MAF and a factory paper filter.
By the way, cleaning won't help them.
One of the cheapest prices on line is thru Tony at the LRRF, 650-365-4145.
Next time you read information like this, believe it, it will save you some money.

In reading more, K&N seem to be pretty bullish about their product NOT causing MAF failures!!
http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/MAFTestresults.htm
This page has videos of tests conducted:
http://www.knfilters.com/MAF/massair.htm
I can see you were at the forefront of the complaints, but can you (as one person) really stack up against the hundreds of people using the product.
Not trying to bash you here just being scientific -(your environmental sample is statistically not valid)

There are 1000's of people using their filters with no problems and then there are those of us the have the newer style Bosch MAF's that can't handle the oil mist that slowly gets into the MAF electronics.
The good thing is you don't have to take my word for it, replace your $200 failed MAF, keep your K&N and let it kill a second one.
I can't twist your arm on this. At some point you will see I am right.
