Cooling System- Overheating/No Cab Heat

I noticed a problem in my cooling system when the cab was heating up intermittently. My first thought was that the thermostat wasn't operating properly. Then on my way home the engine overheated. I replaced the thermostat and filled the reservior up with coolant only to again have overheating, this time I had about half a gallon of coolant leak from some un-obvious location. I check my work on the thermostat, dry as a bone. I couldn't find the leak but suspect the water pump. Could a water pump cause overheating and the cabin not to heat? Thanks for help anyone!

P.S. I'm trying to learn how to work on my car as I plan on owning it for many years. It is very fun! I'm not trying to be cheap..

What year and how many miles?

Avoid driving as much as you can untill you can get this sorted out, a Rover engine can be completely ruined after a single overheat, so be VERY careful with your driving. If you have to drive at all stop if your needle even goes up just a little bit, you want to avoid driving if at all possible though.

Because of the possibility of overheating and loosing the engine, I would fill the coolant bottle up, go staright to a shop, have them pressure test the system and get it fixed, "TODAY".
Let us know what they find.
