Default Damp carpet on front passenger side

So I have ben picking away at some of the issues with my 2001 Discovery SE. Most recently I had noticed that the floor mat on the passenger side was damp. Any guesses where the dampness could be originating.

Secondly , prior to noticing the dampness I had been noticing a bad smell coming from the vents when the heater is on. I keep the temp control on auto and in the early mornings or cooler days when the heat comes on...phooey (not pleasant). If the a/c is on and blowing cool, the smell is non existant and with the temp control off there is no odor noticable.

heck...no that I think of it...could the two issues be connected. Any ways to check for leaking in the heating system behind the dash?
thanks in advance

Smell the dampness in the floormat - is the odor the same as the bad smell from the heater? If so, that smell is antifreeze and you probably need a new heater core. Start on page 80-5 of the RAVE Manual and go from there... all the repair stuff starts around the 80-20s.

The lower windshield finisher...
If it is not flush with the bottom of the windshield, water can enter past this and into the HVAC blower intake..
