Default Defender 110 Losing power when accelerating

Hi All,
I'm at my wits end. I'll try to explain this and maybe someone can identify the problem.

I picked up a 1993 Defender 110 NAS this past summer. The crank was cracked so a used 4.2 was installed. The mechanic didn't do a great job so I moved to a new shop and they have been good but we are stumped by this.

Truck starts and idles fine (altho mileage is AWFUL). Once it warms up though the problem starts. When I gas it it loses power, in every gear. If I lift my foot it settles at idle. It's worst on the highway. Sometime it won't accelerate past idle and I have to put hazards on and let it roll until it "catches" again. Sometimes it just stops and the tach needle jumps around until it settles and I move on.

Before I start buying parts I thought I would ask the community. I'm new to rovers but now cars. This has me confused.

Some ideas are the MAF, Throttle position sensor or ignition igniter.

ANY thoughts or input would be appreciated. I love the truck but...
Thanks
Steve

Did they put a 4.2 ECU in with the new engine? Not having a Defender, I thought they came with a 4.0 and that is where my thoughts begin.

The ECU wasnt changed. I was told by several people that it wasnt necessary. But like I said I'm new to rovers. It was a 3.9 changed to a 4.2.

I may be mistaken, but I doubt it. The 3.9 and 4.2 should have different ECUs with different programmed timing curves. You need the correct ECU.

Would the wrong ECU cause this weirdness? Engine is strong but something is whacked. Do I get an ECU for the 4.2?

The think is that this didnt start happening until I was driving the truck for several months. Do you know where I could get the correct ECU, reliable and affordable?
Thanks for the input

I received the 2nd and seemingly correct MAF. Installed it and took off.
WORSE than before. Rolled right to garage that had the truck for 2 weeks and groveled.
He couldnt do anything until next day. So I opened the hood and started checking things out. Mechanic saw me and came to help. Turns out at the right side of the MAF the rubber ending of the intake hose was not seated well AND at the plenum there seemed to be a small hole. He reseated the rubber and tightened it back. I wrapped the other end in duct tape et viola. Running great.
This leads me to wonder if the whole time it was only the hose and NOT the MAF.
I was looking online for a replacement hose but can't find one like mine. Its an odd sort of woven and hardened material. Anyone know anything about this?
I found one but its straight rubber. Mine seems to be formed to the shape it needs to be.

SO happy to finally be driving (excepting the $4.50/gal gas)

Thanks All
Steve

Update: MAF and hose replace. Problem persists. Mechanic is saying fuel pump now. Sad part is a put a new one in from Rovers North not long ago. Rover North president ignored my email when I asked for help. Figures. Better to buy elsewhere. Less money, better service.

Mechanic called. Gas tank and fuel filter and pump are filled with....SUGAR.
I've been out of high school for 30 years.
Very very weird.
Time for a locking gas cap.
