Default here is a brain teaser that needs solving.

I just brought a 2002 disco 3.9v8 great truck, I have two problems i want to diagnose. 1. when the key is in, turned to acc there is a electronic beeping generating from the ABS unit, I have checked all conections and cant workit out. 2. at idle at 10-15 second interviles there is a noise that almost sounds like a hiss that i cant track down but it is quite loud, very annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Stephen, (Auckland New Zealand)

So, what you are saying there is a beeping sound coming from your 4.0's ABS, do you have an ABS warning light on, are the brakes acting up and why do you think it is coming from the ABS?
As for the other noise, does your engine have the secondary air injection system, if so this may be your noise, they are known to make some noise.

I tracked the the sound down and definately eminateing from the ABS unit and the beeping is really soft. I feel the brakes are quite good, but if anything a little spongy. Mike can you tell me more about this secondary air injection? would this be promonent at idle and what sought of sound would it make. I am that kind of guy goes crazy if a sound doesnt feel like belong there.

p.s. thanks so far for the help.

something I forgot to add. the strange hissing sound actually occurs every 16 second like its cycling. could this be some sought of pressure leaking or pump failure?

I have taken the car to three dealers today with three very different outlooks.
1, performed a Autologic Diagnostic test and road test but unable to locate or identify the fault, thought to be faulty solenoid on the ace pump hence the recycling every 16 seconds.

2, this was a landrover specialist had a look and diagnosed it to be faulty ACE piping and requies replacing all the piping for the ACE front and rear all four 2x high pressure and 2x low pressure $2500.00

3, this is also another specialist and called ROVERLAND very professional and knew his rovers, it has been diagnosed as having stones flicked up on the underbody and lodged onto the ACE piping and when the ACE pump cycles it vibrates through all the piping on the truck.

it just goes to show its always best to go and get three quotes...
