Default radio cuts out

so my radio cuts out (04 Disco II). Ive seen some other posts on this topic, but not enough detail to know if its the same issue, and no real resolution. i hope somebuddy out there knows something.

so the radio just wont produce sound to the speakers. but the radio itself stays on, display stays lit. once in a while, there will be a loud CRACKle, then sound - the way a radio should be! but its lasts 10-40 seconds before the sound just goes away. doesnt fade out, but abruptly stops.

because the radio stays powered, i have a feeling it is not the radio itself that is the problem. I have read about a stock amp that may be the issue, but how do i know if i have the stock amp or not? if i do, where would it be? any other ideas on how to determine if it is the radio or something else causing this? anything else between radio and speakers that could be the source of the problem?

thanks for any help, and please ask for more detail if you need it!

My discoI does that. I found giving a firm thump on the dash just above the radio makes it go back on, I suspect a bad wiring connector, but I have gone through them a number of times. Still does it occasionally (new aftermarket radio didn't help)
