Default Rockershaft problems

Hi All,

Here’s a question for the Landy fundis on this forum. I have a 1996 Land-Rover hardtop with a 300Tdi motor in. Took it in to the Local Landy shop for a service, new cambelt, and waterpump on 220 000km. Received it back on Friday, and took it for a drive yesterday, drove a total of approximately 35-40 km since receiving it from the shop, when it started losing power and making a weird knocking sound (somewhere between a tappet knock and a steel toolbox being rattle around). Pulled off the road, and was welcomed by oil all over the engine, being forced out between the tapped cover and the head. On further inspection, it was found that bolts nr 1 and 3 that fixes the rocker shaft to the head has been pulled/stripped out of their holes and that the tappet cover was loose.

Seeing as I’m now faced with a potentially very expensive repair bill, my question is………….could this have been caused by fitting the cambelt wrongly, or any other intervention, seing as the mechanic has assured me, that they never removed the tappet cover.

Please bear with me if I have any of the technical terms wrong, but if there are any questions, I would try to answer them

Regards
Louis
