Default Should I?

Hi all,

First post on this forum or any Landrover Forum for that matter.
I have always loved these vehicles, they are old school and look the part. Anyway, a 96 Discovery is for sale near me for $1200 running and driving. At first glance.it looks good, headliner is there, seats are torn and strangely both ads the guy put up mention how you can sleep in the back, so I'm assuming he's done so alot (the house it's parked in front of was not livable in for some time). Ad says leaks oil and power windows don't work. I am a mechanic so wrench time is not an issue. Body looks good, nice wheels and factory sunroofs and brush guard. Forest Green? I know these trucks have head gasket issues, what should I look for and should I buy it? Goal is to turn it around for a profit and eventually own one or more. British luxury vehicles are so cheap where I live and I think it is because people can't afford the parts/maintenance which is easy for me. (1500.00 03 Jag Xtype blown head gasket I so want) Anyway I'm a Ford/Volvo/Jeep guy so schooling needed.

You don't mention the mileage on it, but you're not going to make much of a profit on that. Value is probably between $3500 and $4500 if there are zero problems and you have solid service records (unlikely).
They all leak oil, so it must be a noteworthy one for the seller to mention it. Could be from the engine, the transmission, or the transfer case; each one is an indicator of a different set of problems.
At a wild ballpark estimate, you would need to put $1000 in parts and fluids into it to even have a hope of selling it on. Possibly more if you do water pump or oil pump. And that's not factoring in all of the issues that you WILL find as soon as you start trying to put things right.
Buy if you want it for yourself. It's not a luxury vehicle any more.
