I bought this motor to go in my 2000 disco and noticed some differences look at the thermostat ??? and there was no power steering pump ???? did this come out of a range rover with no power steering???? I also got 2 intake plenums maybe the numbers will help.....how can i tell if this is a 4.0 or 4.6? Thanks in advance :driving:

Power steering pump is on there, bottom right front pulley. The empty bracket mount above it is for the optional ACE pump, for the front suspension.

The ACE system works on the front and rear suspension.

It's really hard to tell if there's actually a PAS pump behind that ridged pulley, but that's where the PAS pump would be mounted.

I looked today there is no power steering pump on there...that is just a holder for the idler pulley????:driving:

All Range Rover's in that year range had power steering.

well this motor doesn't have a pump just a holder for the pulley look at the pix:driving:

ArmyRover 09-09-2017 08:06 PM

so what your saying is someone pulled the pump off a motor

earnies2 09-09-2017 08:18 PM

No what i am saying is the motor i bought never had a power steering pump there is a pulley holder bolted in place of the pump and it holds an idler pulley in place of the pump...it also has a P38 thermostat so i think it came out of a P38 . :driving:

Well I can see the AC compressor is missing than the idler and the empty spot where the PS pump goes. As for the P38 thermostat it may well be never paid much attention to it. From looking at your off angle pics I would say someone pulled the motor and left the PS pump connected to the lines and same with the AC compressor.

look at the pix

if someone pulled the motor and left the power steering pump connected to the lines than explain why there is an idler pulley ware the pump is supposed to go and if they pulled the pump there would be no pump or pulley :driving:

I might be missing something i need to go and look at the disco that this motor is going into and see ware the power steering pump goes thanks for responding i appreciate it do you know how to tell the difference between a 4.0 or 4.6 I will probably take this motor apart and do the heads. mabe rod and main bearings and a timing chain...not sure how far i will get into the motor until i get into it :disco:

ArmyRover 09-10-2017 12:22 PM

only way I know to tell is by dropping the pan and looking at the crank if memory serves. There may be a better way.

OH+D 09-12-2017 02:10 PM

Yes that is a P38 engine. The dead giveaway is the motor mount design. The front cover is also completely different (different oil filter location). You would be able to make it work in your application by swapping the front cover and accessory drive with your existing parts. I would recommend replacing the oil pump if you do so.
