Default zf 22 & 24 transmissions

does any one know if the bell housing is bolt on or is the whole thing cast as one unit?

thanks, if it does unbolt then let me throw this out there.

everyone knows you can punch a 4.0 or 4.6 to 5.0 at great cost.

has anyone ever looked an putting a newer ZF 6 or 8 speed transmission behind one of these whopping 250 cu in motor?
im thinking about a wider useful band and improved mileage.

there seems to be a lot of vehicle out there with little 2.l motors but all have 6 or 8 speed zf tranys that zip right along

The first hurdle would be the computer control of the those transmissions, the next hurdle would be input shaft differences and torque converter etc.

Be wicked cool if you figured it out though. It might be cost prohibitive though

And once no more hair/skin on head from scratching figuring out the electrical, computer & mechanical any realized MPG and trans durability would suffer moving around the big heavy square box.

i don't know about it not standing up, ZF are used in everything from big commercial trucks to new jeeps.

as mentioned you would have to have a stand alone controller for the tranny. simular to the one compushift has for the 22/24 ZFs. or use a modified controller from the donor.

as far as cost not cheap depending upon what the original donor was, but probably a lot less the the 6-7k you going to have into a stroker motor.

have to start looking at the zf forum, im guessing there must be one out there

So you're thinking of a stand alone trans swap versus eng/trans from a light weight. Would be nice to have some higher gearing for the highway.

just a tranny swap a ZF22/24 for a ZF ???? and use the 22/24 bellhousing.

I do not see a need for a gear swap, i could be wrong.

But im assume the 2-4 extra gears would make up for any gearing problem,
on the highway your still going to be in over drive or high with the stock gears, i dont see the problem.

but thats what a forum is about ask questions and bounce idea's off each other; right

I was assuming the ZF 6sp would be geared higher in 6th reducing your RPM and increase MPG(nice) not suggesting gearing change.

i got you now, yes

I am "assuming" that the extra gear shifts will take some load off the engine and drop the rpm across the whole range
result in longer life and better mpg's.

241 or 260 cu in can use all the help it can get moving 2 tons down the road
