No catalytic converters

Default No catalytic converters

96 Disco
will the computer work without the catalytic converters?

No, why would you want to do that any way, cost you power and mileage. Just let us know what is wrong with your truck so we can help you fix it correctly.

At least one is bad
we have chopped the frame and made a rock buggy
need some room and do not want to buy one
It will not be driven on the street

Mike, why would you say that about removing the cats? Except for reducing backpressure and increasing exhaust flow, both usually associated with benefits to performance and fuel mileage, Cats can be removed and should be replaced with higher flow models. Permenantly removing cats is illegal in the US so they should not be removed on a highway vehicle.

Yes it is illegal, it also will mess with the signals from all 4 02 sensors which then causes the engine to run in open loop, full rich for bad mileage a less power.

Yes I will agree that the lack of a catyltic converter will effect the down stream O2 sensor enrichening the system (default mode). The purpose of the lambda sensor is to provide lean mixture at all throttle settings (feedback loop). It does not reduce power though. Having removed Cats from my 1996 and 2002 Discos "as required" for using them overseas, the power did increase (dyno), and mileage was about the same.

I plan to use a spacer to move the rear o2 out of the main flow so the computer does not know the cats are removed

Pretty much a "cheap shot" yourself there "Disco Mike". I believe the Gentleman originally stated the vehicle was to be used Off Road, as such the laws you are so concerned about don't normally apply. 222

So, about the CATS, on my Porsche, I have what you call a "Test Pipe"... Is it legal.. NO.. not by any means.. but man, does it increase the power.. coupled up with the ecu chips, this thing means business for real!! I don't know about the disco, but there are companies out there "over seas" that specially make and ship then to you. Basically, when you look under the truck, it looks exactly like there are CATS, but there is nothing in there. Keep in mind that they are more expensive than just buying new CATS, but if the off road benefits are worth it, why no and if that is all you us it for, ****, for sure why not!!

That is just my 2 cents, I don't want to get into the whole pitty patty deal you all have going on here so if it's worth it to you, look it up, if not, just forget I said anything about it!!

I forgot to add.. Here in Texas, we don't have emission testing yet, so the "fake" CAT passes inspection every time when they look under the car, its crazy stuff, i sweat it out every single time... Just had to add that in.... Ok, i'm done now...
