Default Key fob battery

I called the Landrover dealer here in Maine and was advised by the parts department that they do not replace the battery or repair a DEAD key Fob. My only option unless i DIY the repair myself is to BUY A NEW KEY and new PROGRAMING> Cost: $420.00

Is this true. Everyone who has a dead key fob has to fix it yourself or buy a NEW one???

Seems ridiculous.

Best,

Gordon

Yes, unfortunately.

Also, you could have simply added this post to the other thread you created on this topic.

Yes, that's how it works, and as ThorInc said, it's obnoxious to create new threads when you should instead comment on the first one you created.

It's either $420 at the dealer or talk to someone with some soldering skills and pay them to change the battery for you. It's a 30 minute job at most.

Thank you both.
sorry for the 2nd thread.
the key fob did unlock the car door. Is it ok for me to insert the fob into the cradle and see if the car starts?
if the car doesn’t start will the fob eject?
if the car starts on that low fob battery should I take the car for a drive and see if the fob charges?
thanks,
gordon

Yes. It's what you do with any FOB.

If the car battery is properly charged and the slot pulled the key in, it should, yes.

The battery in the LR2 FOB is not rechargeable. That's only a feature in newer Land Rover models. Which year LR2 do you have?

I'm curious, did the dealer run the diagnostic and confirm that the problem is in fact the FOB? Because if you can unlock the car but it won't start, the problem may be elsewhere.

I did buy the new housing off ebay. I think it cost me $20 - $30. It came with instructions. You have to remove the chip board from original FOB, and put it in the new housing with the new battery. The downside is you will need to so some minor soldering. So you will need a soldering gun and the guts to do some soldering. It is pretty simple, but it is not a simple pop-it-out pop-it-in situation. But it will save you $350+ and only takes at most 30mins.

Sorry guys, this is not adding up. The battery is replaceable as is the body of the fob. Also, at my dealer, the parts department does this job right in front of me, on the counter in about 2 minutes.
My parts department has done this many times with my Jags and my LR. The cost is never over $20.
So for my clarification, what exactly is the issue.
