Needing some help temp gage issue
 

Was driving my 08 lr2 out of no where the temp gage said overheating then jumped back to normal over and over again I'm not leaking coolant and the engine isn't over heating. Any one have some advice for me?

Make sure the connector to the coolant temperature sensor (top right of the thermostat, #2 in the diagram below) is secure and the wiring is not damaged. If the connector and wiring looks ok you may need to replace the sensor. If you do that, replace the thermostat while you're at it, and check to see if the coolant hoses need to be replaced as well. It takes some doing to get in there so you might as well check/replace those things while you've got access.

I have a 2005 chevy silverado. A couple of days ago i noticed my truck was running about 240F according to the needle. I pulled into a gas station to check the coolant level and it was topped off. When i turned the car back on the temperature needle jumped to almost 260F. This is when i became skeptical that the engine wasn't running hot. I turned the heat all the way up, opened the windows and tried not to stop. The needle didn't budge. I then pulled into another gas station, opened the hood and let it cool for 15 minutes then took the radiator cap off. The cap was cool, only a little air came out, no steam or bubbling of any kind. I cranked it up again with no trouble and the needle was buried hot. I drove back to my place without incident. the next morning I started the engine up cold and the needle was still buried Nox Vidmate VLC past 260F. I'm convinced its not running hot, but i have no idea what could be causing this. Any advice?

Oh hell, I'm bored today.

The 2005 Chevy Silverado coolant temperature sensor is located next to the cylinder head on the coolant pipe. $10 says that's the problem and it needs to be replaced. I'm going to guess it's something like a 10-20 minute DIY job. If you need help, check the service manual. If that doesn't work, check with Manuel.
