Default 19" Tires - yeah it's lame - why?

Can somebody explain the WHY manufacturers don't make their most popular AT tires in 19". I'm simply confused as to why people with 16, 17, 18, and 20" wheels don't seem to have problems with choice.

What is the technical reason there are very few decent 19" AT choices?

Many Thanks

easy... the 19 inch wheel doesn't allow for a tall enough sidewall to make AT mean anything. The tread design means very little.

This is true, but it does not explain why there are more 20" sizes than 19" sizes. My guess is that there are just not a lot of vehicles that have 19" wheels and would be utilized off-road.

Goodyear introduced the Duratrac in 255/55/19 and its specs are completely different than all the others, plus it is the only size made somewhere else (Germany). I asked them about what was different, but the only response I received was that they introduced the 255/55/19 Duratrac specifically for the Land Rover.

Anyway, I put a set on our Range Rover and they are quite nice! Pretty quiet and smooth, of course we only have a few miles on them so far, but as smooth and quiet as the AT2's on our LR3.

I'm in the same mindset at catman - it doesn't explain the 20" options, while still few, are several more than the 19"

@catman, I'm considering the All Terrain Adventure in 255/60/19 for the slightly extra sidewall and I simply don't need such an aggressive tire as the Duratrac. They do look pretty sweet though. My only concern about the 255/60/19 is the load rating. I'm pretty sure it won't rub, but not so sure the rating is high enough.

The difference with 20's is there are tires for 20 inch wheels that are also high profile. For example, you will find Goodyear MT/R's for 20's, but they are 35" tall. 20" wheels are common on pickup trucks. 19's are not.

Thanks binvanna - good point. Pickups are going to have much more clearance for high sidewalls.

The 20" are for all the brodozers with 8" lifts and 40" tires. 19" is probably just uncommon across the board.

Yeah you are all correct. Why make a low-profile AT tire? You don't. So if you have 19s you're SOL and even with 18s the selection is scant. The exception is 20s, simply because....those are "dubs."

We were considering the Adventure in the plus size as well. In the end my wife just likes the beefier design, and the DuraTracs really do ride nice so far. The load rating should not be an issue, the 20" OEM wheels were 109 rated just like the Adventure. They will not rub, they are only marginally taller and not any wider. However, you would have to consider a 5th tire for the spare as well, which is an additional factor.

If you get them post a pic. Here is what the DuraTracs look like (sorry for the lower quality cell phone pics, it is all I had at the time).

Well thanks for that!
The Duratracs just moved to the top of my short list. They look awesome and I know they'll perform well in my conditions.
