About the join the crew: Buying a used LR3 (have questions)
Hi,
I'm planning to buy a used LR3 and have some questions.
Mileage:
Seems to break out like this
25 - 50,000 KM Landrover dealer owned trucks with a premium
75,000 - 100,00 km independent dealer/private sale cars much reduced price
Any thoughts on the point where these trucks start to see serious maintenance issues?
Engine
V8 or V6
Thoughts?
V8 drives better, and quite a bit more quiet ride.
Looked at everything from 20,000 km V8 HSE Lux edition to higher milage V6 SE
any help appreciated
thanks
Matt

Hrmm,
I don't know... the LR3 as much as I love it was the worst car I ever bought, at least in terms of the issues it's having. I had a rough estimate of $2700 and I've had mine roughly two years, its a 2005 LR3 SE with V8 engine.
There no reason you would want the V6, you only get like 1 MPG city better mileage and even the V8 isn't fast. Test drove a V6 and it felt extremely underpowered.
Parts are expensive but now more than most luxury cars I've owned, everyone says its outrageous but my old BMW had like, $10,000 worth of repairs done but luckily all of it was under the aftermarket warranty.
The car itself has been amazing but I wish I bought a Range Rover instead after driving one.
I went the cheap way, paid 12 grand for mine so I expected some repairs, it was at some shady back alley car lot but the carproof I did on my own to make sure it was all clean and the dealer wasn't stiffing the real one, and found it to be OK, 1 owner in US, one rear collision in US with $400 damage, dealer bought at auction in New York. Looked good and mechanic said there were no problems to report of so I went ahead and bought it. For the price I paid I don't think I could've gotten anything better. But I wish I bought a more expensive one that doesn't need repairs, and maybe navigation too.
1 heated seat stopped working and I have air suspension fault: normal height only message pop up as well as transmission system fault. Not bad, from others stories I expected more problems. Heard from whats happened with mine in the past it may most likely be ABS module, because sometimes it works sometimes it won't.

Definitely get the V8.
Buy the newest, lowest mileage LR3 you can afford and set aside some $$ to purchase a warranty. I own a '05 LR3, have had it for about 3 years bought it with 36,000 and have about 70,000 on it. Total repairs (outside of normal maintainence) around $3500 (US) all covered under the warranty.
They're great SUV's but you need to have a sense of humor, some cash for repairs/maintainence and know when it's time to let them go.
