Default Broken axle shaft = Dead in the water!

Just a warning to all of you out there. I broke an axle shaft (actually the housing/*****) on a trail 6 hours from home which in itself sucks BUT..

If one axle pulls from the hub then the truck sends all power to that axle..

I was able to limp a short distance keeping the wheel straight in 4LO until the spindle stripped and then I couldn't move or park the truck. This is ridiculous as in any other 4wd I would move with the center locked.

So am I expected to carry 3 spare axles(one rear, two front) to feel confident on the trail?

May I ask about your setup and the conditions you were in when this occurred?

....will help in answering your last question.

We have center locking transfer cases on the LR3, and on my HSE I have the rear e-locker. I would think if you selected the proper terrain mode it would lock the center transfer case, and if it detected wheel spin I'd hope it would engage the rear locker.

I'm new to the LR3 and it's modes, so I may be wrong.

Correct. There is no manual lock for either of those diffs but in "Rock Crawl" they are so sensitive that they will be locked most of the time.

I two have ridden in one with a blown axle. Sounded like a bag of hammered butt holes but it got back down the trail. Lockers kicked in and it drug itself home. Maybe his center diff wasn't locking for some reason

Rock crawl did indeed get me a couple miles until the axle spindle fully stripped and then trust me its dead in the water. Also keep in mind that home is probably not just down the road and since rock crawl only works in low range and will unlock the center diff in 2nd gear its going to be jogging pace.

You never did provided details on your setup. I'd just be interested to see if you are running in any non-typical configuration like spacers or polybushes or something.

All stock although I run a lift through the gap tool which may compound the issue/angle but I started a poll to try to get some data.

I also noticed the design can be checked and lubed.

Do you run the lift full-time?
