Looking at a 2006 Land Rover with Transmission Problem

So I was looking into trading one of my non running cars with a 2006 Land Rover. Everything on the car appears to work fine, and it also runs perfectly fine. But when it gets warm, it starts shifting erratically and slipping. I don't know a huge amount about Land Rovers so learning as I go. Is this a common problem? Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Depends on the mileage, could be as simple as low or incorrect fluid used, bad clutch packs, worn stator bushes or problems in the valve body.
If its cheap and you are good on the tools it may be worthwhile.

It’s a common transmission used by Mercedes, GM, Ford, and BMW. ZF6HP26 if you want to research them. They are pretty solid units and parts aren’t hard to come by. The symptoms you describe aren’t indicative of any particular failure, so it’s a roll of the dice.

For the right price, I’d do it.

I’ve talked to a shop owner that has fixed multiple by replacing the valve body. BUT, even though that’s easier than a complete rebuild, you still have to remove the trans and open it up to do this.

The previous owner of my 2008 L322 had the transmission replaced with a rebuilt unit. $5000 for the tranny and $3000 for labour. These are Canadian dollars but still pretty expensive in US dollars. Personally I wouldn't buy it without first scanning the Trans with GAP or equivalent. The tranny is the same 6 speed as LR3.

No you don't, valve body replacement only requires the oil pan to be removed.

Okay, thanks for the replies everyone. I traded a old 944 I had that needs a lot of work, I'm quite happy with my trade so far because it appears to be leaking slightly on the back of the valve body, so at least I can visually see a problem here. I think I'm definitely on the right track and hopefully I got lucky. Like I said, not much experience with these but they're super cool so far. I'll keep you guys updated on my progress.

If you see a leak, clean it up (so you can later find what’s leaking) and using the right ZF trans fluid fill it to the right level. If you are lucky it might fix your issues.

oh cool. I did not know that

Does is seem to slip when taking curves? Is the shifter tight when changing gears? A bound up shift linkage (very common) an cause the trans to drop into neutral which some might interpret as slippage when all it needs is linkage lubrication or replacement.
