Mack73,

If I understand your last message correctly you have concluded that I am dissatisfied with my LR3.

I am not. I am an enthusiast. I love the vehicle and hope to be one of those that sees 400K.

I certainly wish it cost less to own. I also wish the dealers had greater depth of experience and knowledge.

Over the last year I have spent a great deal of time researching what other owners experience. and speaking with local technicians, including our local independent LR service specialist, who also happens to belong to the LR Club - there appears to be a consensus that reflects the information I provided in these threads. The information I have obtained, along with my own personal experience, indicates that the service requirements of the LR3 are very much reflective of my experience.

The purpose of my research is to better understand the vehicle and what will fail and when so that I do not have an experience like last week where the day after I pick up my vehicle from the dealer to go on a long distance trip that it has another system fault.

I want to replace parts before their normal life expectancy. I don't want to be stranded somewhere. I want to reduce the inconveniences and frustrations of habitual service problems.

ghtaylor,

If you don't already, get an IIDTool. You will then be able to read and clear your own faults (and give yourself a electronic lift if that's up your alley).

Here's my service plan as I subscribe to the same philosophy. I'm sure some of these parts "could" last longer, but I rather replace them early on MY schedule then wait for them to inconvenience me:

1. Brakes as needed (start monitoring around the 25k mark. If you replace them before the brake warning light comes on, you don't need to replace the wear sensor)
2. Tires as needed
3. Air compressor re-fresh every 3 years. Not sure if the new hitachi has a refresh kit.
4. Battery: every 4 years
5. Rear hatch actuator: every 4 years
6. All light bulbs (not headlight): every 5 years. Only get bulbs from dealer
7. Diff/Transfer case fluids: every 30k
8. Clean Throttle Body every 40k
9. Front Lower A arms: every 40-50k (uppers probably every other or as needed)
10. Transmission fluid: every 50k
11. Cooling T fitting: every 50k
12. Brake light switch: every 50k
13. Alternator: every 75k (maybe more here, I don't know enough failure points to put a mileage on this)
14. Tie rod ends: every 80-100k (2 cycles of the a-arms)
15. Replace height sensors every 100k
16. Thermostat: every 100k
17. Mass airflow sensor: every 100k
18. Hood latch alarm: every 100k
19. Airbags and shocks: every 100-150k (I'm going 100 since I heavily offroad, but I could see another 50k for street rigs)
20. Steering column lower joint: every 100-150k (again I'm doing 100 but you could get 150k on the street)
21. Wheel bearings: Front every 100k, Rear maybe every 150k or as needed. No real sure here.
22. RF supressor: every 150k
23. Steering rack: Not sure here, maybe 150k?
24. Replace air compressor: every 150k
25. Rear A-arms: every 150k

I'm not sure I would recommend this agressive schedule if you arn't doing the work yourself. The majority on the list are cheap and can be done in a couple hours with hand tools. Some of course are dealer only (a-arms, wheel bearings). If you arn't doing the work yourself, it is going to be a fortune - I would instead wait until they fail, it would be cheaper.
