Just to be clear, I have one. Am considering a 2nd one. Currently have an '06 LR3 and an '03 Disco. Have driven nothing but LRs for the past 20+ years.

Engine: Discovery 4=5.0L SCV8 or 3.0L V6; both are nice. Discovery 3=4.4L V8, or (in very rare cases) a 4.0L V6; 4.4 is proven, simple, good compromise

Tranny: Discovery 4=8speed, Discovery 3=6speed, your choice really.

Wheels: Discovery 4=19" wheels only, this sucks (can buy aftermarket 18"s, but this=$$$). Discovery 3=18" wheels stock, great size for tire selection, still look good.

Differentials: Discovery 4=most problems fixed, more $$$ for the HD than before. Discovery 3=expect some problems, still okay though, ARB makes lockers if you can't find HD package models.

PM me for exact pricing differences and specifications...
Good list of stuff. If the HD was only $600 when buying an LR3 why is it so hard to find? Seems odd.

Timing chain and guide wear/sloppiness at a relatively low mileage requiring replacement. Most are fixed under warranty, but if you aren't under warranty anymore, it's a couple thousand dollars.

Because dealers and customers didnt order it. 95% of the LR3's never leave the pavement. SO, 5% of LR3 are HD sounds about right.

Right. I was fortunate enough to order my LR3 (nearly 11 years ago!) and the HD Package was a no-brainer.

I actually got mine by accident. Figured it was a unicorn not worth chasing while looking, and then after purchase while looking through the documents, there was the original window sticker, with the HD package listed. Quite a nice surprise.

That's literally how I got mine.
