Default Radio Gaga

This is random and strange so I thought I throw it at you guys to see if there is some known explanation..... lately, when the radio is on the sound will randomly go up and the sound is like the speakers are blown... really muffled and distorted. Then it will revert to normal after a few minutes. Things is, when the radio is acting up, the CD function doesn't induce the same effect so I'm ruling out the amp or the deck... are the antenna's on these known to have issues?

Thanx for any ideas...

IIRC, there is a feature (that can be disabled) where the volume adjusts according to the level of ambient noise. Maybe this has something to do with it....
