Default Replacing Key Cylinder

Looking for thoughts on approach to replacing the key/ignition cylinder on my LR3. I've been advised that I need to take it to a dealer. All I'm seeing is $$$. I do have the Gap tool which should allow me to reprogram keys although I've never looked into how exactly to do that. Anyone have experience with this?

Pretty sure you need a working key then turn the cylinder and push a pin within the column to release it. At least that is how most are. You need a working key to program more keys with the GAP tool.

If you're just replacing it because it is worn out/broken and you have the key then it isn't too hard. You'll have to remove the plastic surrounding the column to get at the hole to release the cylinder. This video shows how to release the lock cylinder:

You don't need to re-program keys, you just need the blade cut to match the new lock cylinder. If you don't have the keys, I'm not sure how you would do it. Also, I'd test the actual ignition switch if you're troubleshooting ignition/key position related electrical problems before replacing the lock cylinder.
